The third major of the 2022 golf season arrived with controversy swirling behind the scenes. However, the USGA ensured as little wind as possible was taken out of the sails of its premier event as 2022 US Open contenders began taking on The Country Club. It’s be the first time since 1988 that a national champion will be crowned in Brookline, Massachusetts, and some of the top contenders playing with big-time momentum.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas are both looking to double up. Scheffler is aiming to become the sixth golfer to win the Masters and US Open in the same season, while Thomas seeks to become the seventh in history to capture titles at the PGA and US Open consecutively.

Neither was the favorite at Brookline, though. That honor belonged to Rory McIlroy, who entered hotter than anyone else in the field after defending his title at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy has three other top 10 finishes in his four prior starts and is one of just four golfers to finish in the top 10 at three (or more) of the last five US Opens. McIlroy made the most of his momentum, opening play at The Country Club as the one-time clubhouse leader after shooting a 3-under 67 in which he went bogey-free through the first 17 holes. Rory was a bit perturbed at his bogey on 18 but nevertheless sits in a comfortable spot entering the final 54 holes of action.

The man making the most headlines this week has been Phil Mickelson, who missed the first two majors of the year amid fallout from controversial comments. Mickelson returned to action last week and entered The Country Club still seeking a US Open to round out his career grand slam. Unfortunately for Lefty, he implode during Round 1 with an 8-over 78 and is far closer to finishing last than contending.

While attending the US Open can be a ton of fun, simply being able to watch golf on the game’s grandest stages is an incredible treat each year. We here at CBSSports.com are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the US Open all week long.

Enough talking about it. Here’s how you can watch as much US Open as possible during the week. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout the third major of the year.
